KMC to Monitor Durga Pituri Lane Buildings Affected by Metro Work for 10 Years

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced that it will closely monitor the health and safety of reconstructed houses on Durga Pituri Lane and nearby areas for the next 10 years. This decision comes in the wake of concerns raised over the impact of underground Kolkata Metro operations on local buildings.

According to Mayor, if any structural damage occurs in these houses due to metro activity, the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) will be held responsible and must provide compensation to the affected families. The statement was made during a review meeting at the KMC headquarters on Friday.

Residents Voice Concerns Over Building Safety

During the KMC House meeting, apprehensions were expressed regarding the future of buildings in Durga Pituri Lane and Syakrapara Lane as metro services continue. Local councillor pointed out that residents had earlier been promised new housing within two years. He urged the mayor to establish a dedicated monitoring cell to:

1. Ensure under-construction houses are built as per safety standards
2. Regularly inspect repaired buildings
3. Track and report any fresh cracks or damage

Technical Oversight and Government Approval

Mayor clarified that as per the Chief Minister’s directive, KMC has already approved KMRC’s reconstruction plans for 23 buildings in the affected areas. To strengthen monitoring, a Jadavpur University (JU) technical expert committee will also review the progress and provide professional guidance.

This multi-level supervision aims to guarantee both structural safety and long-term accountability for residents living near the metro project zone.
