The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started a door-to-door survey across New Town to verify property tax records and trade licences for both residential and commercial properties. The initiative is aimed at improving the accuracy of official records and ensuring that property owners comply with existing regulations.
According to an official notice issued by NKDA, property owners are requested to cooperate with representatives from a chartered accountant (CA) firm appointed to conduct the survey. During the visit, officials will collect information and physically verify details related to property tax self-assessments and trade licences.
The main objective of the survey is to update NKDA's property database and ensure that tax assessments are accurate. Officials stated that previous inspections found several cases where property owners had underpaid taxes or failed to update records after making changes to their buildings.
In addition to verifying tax records, the survey will also focus on nearly 1,000 residential properties that are suspected of violating land-use regulations. Authorities believe that some residential buildings may have been converted into commercial establishments without the required approvals.
NKDA officials said the survey will help identify such violations and strengthen enforcement of planning and land-use rules in New Town. The authority expects to have a clearer picture of the number of unauthorised commercial conversions by next month.
Property owners are encouraged to provide the required information during the survey to help maintain accurate records and avoid potential issues related to taxation or licensing in the future.
