In a significant move to strengthen the digital and economic landscape of West Bengal, the state government has announced the development of four new IT parks—three of which will be located in North Bengal, and one in Chinsurah, Hooghly.
According West Bengal’s Minister for IT and Electronics, the state is placing a major focus on expanding IT infrastructure beyond the metropolitan region. “We are aiming for rapid development in North Bengal’s digital ecosystem. Siliguri already has three operational IT parks running at 100% occupancy, which strongly motivated us to expand further,” he said.
Among the upcoming projects, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has already commenced construction of a new IT park in Kurseong. Plans for another in Kalimpong are in advanced stages, with land identified near the Delo area and groundwork expected to begin soon. Additionally, a proposal is underway to develop a new IT park in Jalpaiguri.
While the state government has already marked a location in Chinsurah, Hooghly, for another IT park to further the IT corridor of south Bengal, West Bengal today boasts 22 IT parks with occupancy rates between 80% and 100% indicating high demand in the IT segment. All the parks have been constructed and are operated by Webel (WBEIDC), a state-owned PSU working under the Department of IT & Electronics.
IT and Electronics Department's Additional Chief Secretary also mentioned the new IT park projects in the future at the 16th Business IT Conclave, which was held by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with the World Trade Center, NDITA, and other relevant parties.
This strategic growth not only seeks to generate employment opportunities and foster IT talent in the remote areas, but also strengthens Bengal's resolve to emerge as a leading tech-driven economy in eastern India.
